Strategic Vision

Originally started as a collaboration between the for-profit biomedical editing company ProEdit Japan and the medical relief organization Nyaya Health, EquityEdit has developed a large network of scientists from top universities in the United States and Europe who edit biomedical manuscripts. The revenue they generate funds innovations in pro-poor global health systems.

The globalization of science through the English language has created a large demand for talented, reliable scientists to provide editing services to researchers for whom English is a second language. Despite the expansion of editing companies, the demand for editing services outstrips the supply. EquityEdit seeks to meet this market through its network of scientists and its efficient and cost-effective training and recruitment model.

Both the scientists and the editors themselves are interested in seeing advances in biomedical research provide as large a social benefit as possible. For the global poor to benefit from this research, innovations in global health systems are greatly needed. EquityEdit provides a streamlined mechanism for editors to contribute a portion of their earnings, if they desire, to an organization that innovates in the area of global public health. Our for-profit collaborators donate additional funds because of the value-added that EquityEdit provides for them in terms of recruitment, public relations, marketing, and IT innovations.

Our current beneficiary, Nyaya Health, uses the non-earmarked donations provided by EquityEdit to manage a health clinic in one of the poorest districts of the poorest country in South Asia. They are focused on using recent scientific and technological advances to provide care and to create innovations that improve the health of poor communities. The transparency of Nyaya Health's structure and actions (see nyayahealth.pbwiki.com) allows editors and clients to directly assess the progress made as a result of their donations through EquityEdit. This system of donation provides a clear connection between the science and technology editors help to improve and the health interventions that they help to finance.

Although in the short-term, the main focus is on further developing the model with ProEdit Japan and Nyaya Health, EquityEdit is currently exploring strategies on how to expand to other biomedical companies and non-profit organizations.   For more information about our organization, please email  editor(AT)equityedit.org.
